Thyroid Disorders

Colorado Endocrinology provides comprehensive care for patients with thyroid disorders. This includes thyroid nodules, goiter, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, toxic nodules, Graves disease, postpartum thyroiditis, hypothyroidism affecting pregnancy, and thyroid cancer.

Thyroid Nodules

Expert care provided with in office ultrasound and ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration of thyroid nodules. Both Dr Wagh and Dr Long have performed over a thousand thyroid biopsies. Mutation analysis is also offered for those biopsies that
return as indeterminate.

Hypothyroidism

Insufficient production of thyroid hormone, either due to autoimmune destruction of the thyroid, or due to hx thyroid surgery or radiation exposure. There are several options for thyroid replacement including combined T4/T3 therapy. We understand that there is no one size fits all in thyroid hormone replacement. As a result, we work within the current guidelines of treatment, to find the best replacement protocol for each patient.

Hyperthyroidism

This is a disease that makes the thyroid gland overactive resulting in the speeding up of most organs in the body. The incidence of this disease in the United States is about 1% and affects women 5 to 10 times more often than men. Graves’ disease, nodules in the thyroid gland and inflammation of the thyroid gland called subacute thyroiditis are the most common causes of hyperthyroidism. Pregnancy and post-partum state can also cause a form of hyperthyroidism that is usually temporary.

Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer forms a lump in the thyroid gland and is usually asymptomatic. There are 4 types of thyroid cancers: papillary, follicular, medullary and anaplastic. Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common form of thyroid cancer and most patients with papillary thyroid cancer do not die from their disease and have an excellent prognosis. Surgery and Radioiodine are the main modalities of management for most thyroid cancers.
